More on Orchids

As I contemplated yesterday’s post on Orchids I was reminded of our visit to the RHS garden at Wisley last year.  Wisley was a wonderous treat overall and our 1/2 day there was insufficient time to enjoy all that Wisley has to offer.  One of the treats was the brand new Conservatory with its hundreds of species of Orchids.  Given that the Orchids comprise some 25,000 species, from which breeders have developed more than 100,000 hybrids and cultivars, even Wisley is only a tiny glimpse into what is possible with Orchids.  Orchids remain of the list of things which it is worthwhile learning more about.  That’s a long list by the way…

I was at Wisley on Tuesday, and took loads of photo’s in the Glasshouse. This year for the first time, there are 1000 butterflies in there from 18th Jan until 22nd February 2009. They were stunning, although I am certain I never saw that many ! a lot of them just blended into the plants and were very hard to see. I only live an hour away so we go to Wisley a lot. I love it there at any time of the year. Your photo’s are lovely BTW.

I read that they were going to be doing a butterfly release. One more reason to go. I’m jealous of anyone who lives that close to Wisley. I think we will give it two days the next time…
Our local garden park in neighboring Montgomery County is Brookside Gardens and they release butterflies in a very small part of the conservatory beginning in May. It makes for quite an experience.
