Today is Garden Blogger’s Bloom Day, a monthly tradition started by May Dreams Gardens in which we notetakers for the growing things take special regard of that which is blooming. It is also one of the coldest days of the year in Frederick so that there is not much happening outside beyond our brave little Snowdrops. However on the inside we can take note of one of the gardener’s refuges in times like these — the orchids that sit on the back table by the sunny door. We used to have a greenhouse on the back of the house as part of our solar experimentation from the 1970’s. But never have the orchids done as well as they now do in pretending that our house is a tropical environment.

Your orchids are spectacular!!
Thanks for your comment — the orchids are becoming addictive. That is a very nice butterfly photo on your home page… — jw
Your Orchids are just beautiful! You and others are convincing me to try them with this gorgeous pictures.

The orchids are beautiful. They remind me of my 4-year workstudy stint at Barnard, where I worked at the rooftop greenhouse for 10 hours a week. Watering the orchids in the rainforest room was by far the most beautiful part, especially when it was 20 degrees outside (much like today)!
This is another side of Auntie Ru’s background that I was unaware of… Reminds me of my own undergraduate career. While working on my physics degree I delivered the campus mail at UC Riverside to some of the world’s preeminent agricultural scientists without ever contemplating a career in horticulture. It was only in graduate school that Beth and I rediscovered our peasant roots by raising a small garden…
I never have grown my own orchid, but always covet others’! I love how exotic they look. Your Yellow Oncidium Orchid looks like a giraffe, very cool.
Your orchids are very beautiful. I like the way you have a picture of your garden on your about page.

Those are beautiful orchids. Makes me wish I had more and that the few I had were blooming. Thanks for joining in for bloom day.
Truth in advertising however (and my wife commenting in the background) requires that I note that Beth does almost all the Orchid care. I have been chiefly responsible for acquisition and photography… 🙂
I don’t grow orchids and after viewing your stunning photos, I’m not sure why. Amazing.
Your orchids are beautiful. I’ve never been a big fan of yellow, but one of the prettiest flower arrangements I’ve ever seen was a purple iris, a white lily, and some yellow oncidiums-elegant and beautiful!
