Lycoris radiata
Well it is fully Fall for Garden Blogger’s Bloom Day. One of things I like about this time of year is seeing the things that surprise me by flowering in the Fall. That is almost always the various Lycoris which have a way of jumping out of the ground when it is their time. Today I saw that lovely radiata pictured above, but earlier I had spied what I think might be a straminea cultivar back in the rose bed.

Another great Fall bloomer is Sternbergia.

Sternbergia vernalis
Some people call this Fall Daffodil but to me the flowers are more like a substantial and lovely crocus.
Speaking of Crocus, while I haven’t seen any Fall Crocus yet, the Colchicums are poking up through the grass.

Another noteworthy plant for this time of year is the Crocosmia.

Crocosmia ‘Lucifer’
Durable and long-lasting they are well worth planting.
A surprise for this year was a re-flowering of the Pulsatilla that we enjoyed so much this Spring.

Pulsatilla ‘Ambigua’
Of course I should note that there are many other things flowering around the year essentially all summer and the Banana sits in the midst of them.

Right next to them is the Cestrum ‘Orange Peel’

One thing I have never noted is that the Cestrum (available next year at Plant Delights) are also very nice flowers on the inside of the house.

Flowers have been coming into the house on a regular basis.

I should also mention that some of the greenhouse plants make it into the house too.

Rain Lily (Zepyranthes)

Then of course there also the trees and shrubs around the yard which contribute to our Fall viewing.

Lastly let me finish with Heptacodium

Heptacodium ‘Temple of Bloom’
This remarkable little tree will replace the white flowers with spectacular red leaf bracts next month. A great plant for the entryway to our woods.
I’m so envious of the Lycoris! I have a single specimen, which occasionally makes an appearance with one or 2 flowers, but alas this year even that’s not the case. The Colchicums are lovely too. We garden in very different climates it would seem.
